Itineraries

Day 1

Arrival in Morecambe

Arrive in Morecambe and check into the iconic Midland Hotel, one of Britain’s finest Art Deco buildings, set directly on the promenade with sweeping views across Morecambe Bay. The remainder of the day is free to unwind after travel—walk the seafront, enjoy the changing coastal light, or relax with a drink overlooking the sea. Dinner can be taken in the hotel restaurant or at one of Morecambe’s well-regarded local eateries.

Accommodation: The Midland Hotel, Morecambe

Day 2

Walk to Arnside

Begin walking from Morecambe or Carnforth, following the coastal margins of Morecambe Bay northwards. The route passes through the rich wetlands of RSPB Leighton Moss, one of the UK’s premier bird reserves. In spring and late summer there is an excellent chance of spotting ospreys, alongside bitterns, egrets, and marsh harriers.

Beyond the reserve, the landscape becomes more intimate and wooded as you enter the Arnside & Silverdale National Landscape, famed for its limestone outcrops, ancient woodland, and estuarine views. Arrive in the waterside village of Arnside, which has plenty of places to eat (and drink) and a great fish & chip shop - order ahead at the weekend.

Accommodation: There are plenty of good B&Bs in Arnside to choose from. Luggage is transferred separately

Day 3

Walk to Cartmel & Holker Hall

After breakfast, take the train to Grange-over-Sands, an elegant Edwardian resort overlooking the Kent Estuary. From here, walk inland and upward across limestone pavements to Hampsfell, where panoramic views open out across Morecambe Bay and towards the Lakeland fells.

Descend into the picturesque village of Cartmel for lunch and a visit to Cartmel Priory, a beautifully preserved medieval church with strong monastic roots. In the afternoon, explore nearby Holker Hall, with its impressive interiors and expansive landscaped gardens. Later, take the train from Cark-in-Cartmel to Ulverston, a lively market town with independent shops and cafés, many of which turn into bistros in the evening.

Accommodation: We will select a guesthouse in the town centre. Luggage transferred separately

Day 4

Walk to Furness Abbey

Spend the morning exploring Ulverston, known for its cobbled streets, vibrant cultural scene, and historic market traditions. Then leave town on foot, following the Cistercian Way through rolling countryside and woodland to the atmospheric ruins of Furness Abbey.

Once one of the most powerful Cistercian monasteries in England, the abbey stands in a peaceful valley, offering a striking contrast between grandeur and solitude. From here, continue to the elegant Abbey House Hotel, set within its own landscaped grounds close to the abbey site.

Accommodation: Abbey House Hotel. Luggage transferred separately.

Day 5

Departure day

Complete the final section of the Cistercian Way, walking down to Roa Island. From the small pier, take the short ferry crossing to Piel Island, a place of strong local identity and maritime tradition. Enjoy lunch at the Ship Inn, whose landlord is traditionally crowned King of Piel Island—a light-hearted custom that has endured for centuries.

Return by ferry to Roa Island and transfer by taxi to Barrow-in-Furness station, collecting your luggage en route. From Barrow, direct trains run to Manchester Airport, bringing this compact yet richly varied coastal journey to a smooth conclusion.
