Weather, wildlife and walking conditions through the seasons
The South West Coast Path can be walked at almost any time of year, but the experience changes significantly with the seasons. Weather, daylight, wildlife and accommodation availability all shape how the path feels from month to month.
We created this guide to explain what walking the South West Coast Path is like at different times of year, and to help you decide when best suits your walking style, interests and expectations.

Is there a “best” time to walk the South West Coast Path?
There is no single best time for everyone. However, late spring and early autumn are often considered the most rewarding periods for many walkers, offering a balance of good conditions, quieter paths and a strong sense of place.
The right time for you depends on what you value most — whether that is wildflowers, long days, fewer people or a calmer atmosphere.

Spring (April to June)
Spring is one of the most popular and rewarding times to walk the South West Coast Path.
What to expect
- Wildflowers along cliffs and headlands
- Nesting seabirds and increased wildlife activity
- Fresh, clear light and changing weather
- Growing availability of accommodation
Spring walking feels energetic and alive, though weather can still be unpredictable, particularly in exposed sections.

FAQ: Is spring a good time to walk the South West Coast Path?
Yes. Spring offers excellent walking conditions, abundant wildlife and fewer crowds than high summer. It is one of the most popular times to walk the path.

Summer (July to August)
Summer brings long days, warm seas and a lively atmosphere along the coast.
What to expect
- Maximum daylight
- Busier paths and villages
- Warmer temperatures
- Greater demand for accommodation
Summer walking can be very enjoyable, particularly if you start early in the day and choose sections that suit busier conditions.

FAQ: Is the South West Coast Path very busy in summer?
Some sections can be busy in July and August, particularly near popular coastal towns and beaches. Quieter stretches still exist, and early starts can help avoid crowds.

Autumn (September to October)
Autumn is a favourite season for many experienced coastal walkers.
What to expect
- Quieter paths
- Softer light and rich colours
- Warm seas and calmer conditions
- Reduced accommodation pressure
Autumn walking often feels reflective and spacious, with a strong sense of transition as the season changes.

FAQ: Is autumn a good time for coastal walking?
Yes. Early autumn in particular offers excellent conditions, fewer people and a relaxed atmosphere along the coast.

Winter (November to March)
Winter walking on the South West Coast Path is possible, but requires careful planning and flexibility.
What to expect
- Dramatic seas and weather
- Shorter daylight hours
- Limited accommodation availability
- Very quiet paths
Winter can offer powerful, memorable walking experiences, but it will only suit confident walkers who are comfortable adapting plans to conditions and happy to walk longer distances between accommodation. From December to end of February, luggage transfers would be by taxi creating additional expenses. Also note that cafes and restaurants may be closed.

FAQ: Can you walk the South West Coast Path in winter?
Yes it’s possible, but winter walking requires experience, good preparation and flexibility. Accommodation options may be limited, and weather conditions can be challenging. We don’t recommend this option for most walkers and many other services like luggage transfers and cafes and restaurants may be shut.

Weather and the coastal environment
Coastal weather can change quickly at any time of year. Wind, rain and mist are part of the experience, and being prepared for change is more important than choosing a “perfect” month.
Allowing time for rest days and flexibility often leads to a better experience than trying to fix plans too rigidly.

Accommodation and seasonal planning
Accommodation availability varies by season:
- Spring and autumn offer the best balance of choice and atmosphere
- Summer requires early booking
- Winter may involve longer gaps between places to stay and more cost
B&Bs, guesthouses, cafes and restaurants are often seasonal, particularly in smaller villages, and planning ahead is key.

Our approach to seasonality
At Coast Path Walks, we plan journeys around the strengths of each season rather than trying to force a single ideal timeframe. We believe the South West Coast Path has something different to offer throughout the year, and choosing the right season is part of shaping a meaningful journey. Having said that, we recommend from April to October to most walkers.

In summary
The best time to walk the South West Coast Path depends on what you want from the experience. Spring and autumn suit many walkers, summer offers energy and long days, and winter provides drama and solitude for those prepared for it.
Whatever the season, the path rewards those who walk with flexibility, curiosity and an openness to change.
If you would like help choosing the right time of year for a particular section of the South West Coast Path, we are always happy to advise.
